What Are E-Juices Made of?

Although the number of people who vape continues to rise, there is still a stigma around the act of vaping and the materials used in the vaping process. This is due to the fact that — while there’s a lot of information out there on these subjects — it’s hard to find the vital information necessary to determine whether vaping materials are safe.

To combat this issue, we’re diving into the ingredients of e-juices so that you know what to expect if you decide to try vaping out for yourself. Here is a full list of all the ingredients that are found in most, if not all, e-juices currently on the market.

Propylene glycol

Of the two main ingredients, the first is propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is a clear, slightly syrupy substance that has a faint, sweet taste and no odor. While it may not provide the giant clouds that most vape enthusiasts seek, this substance helps preserve the e-juice and keep it more flavorful. However, it is important to know whether or not your e-juice uses propylene glycol, as a small amount of the population is allergic. If your e-juice doesn’t contain this ingredient, it most contains the next one mentioned (or it may contain a combination of the two).

Vegetable glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is similar to propylene glycol in the sense that it is also an odorless, clear substance with a sweet taste. Unlike propylene glycol, however, vegetable glycerin is more viscous. Because of this change in consistency, vegetable glycerin is perfect for making thick vapor clouds, which is often required by vape enthusiasts. In addition, vegetable glycerin is hypoallergenic and perfect for anyone who’s worried about any potential allergies. However, it is not a preservative like the previous ingredient, and it cannot keep your e-juice as fresh for as long.

Food-grade flavorings and colors

Did you ever wonder how vape juices got their colors and flavors? If so, the answer is simple: food-grade food coloring and flavoring. These are the types of colors and flavors which are added to regular foods throughout the food industry, and they are more than safe to consume. They’re only added to help provide a more flavorful vaping experience and make the vape juice feel more similar to the flavor it’s supposed to represent. For example, a flavor like Euphoria vape juice contains orange, wild berry, and lemon flavorings.

However, while flavorings are nearly always added, there isn’t always any need to add food-grade coloring to the mixture.

Water

If your e-juice only utilizes vegetable glycerin, there is often water added to your e-juice as well. Why? Because vegetable glycerin is typically too viscous to be used in vaporizer device cartridges. In order to make it usable, manufacturers have to add water to the mixture so that it loses some of its consistency and can be easily vaped. That, or they may choose to mix the vegetable glycerin with propylene glycol.

Nicotine and other substances

Although there are e-juices that don’t contain nicotine, quite a few of the options out there do contain nicotine. While nicotine is typically regarded as a dangerous drug because it’s in cigarettes, most health risks associated with smoking come from other tobacco ingredients like tar. While nicotine is most certainly addictive, these types of juices allow users to wean themselves off of smoking. Nicotine is typically added to these solutions for that reason, and it’s harder to find e-juices without it. There are also e-juices out there which may contain additional substances such as CBD or THC.

Now that you know exactly what is in e-juice, there’s one more important aspect to mention: shopping. When you are searching for high-quality e-juice which contains exactly what it says it contains, it is important to shop only from trustworthy manufacturers. As long as you know that a manufacturer is honest and has a proven track record of providing high-quality products, you are almost guaranteed to get just the ingredients listed above.
